P Plates with a different font?

A common question we get is whether you can display a P plate or buy a P plate with a different font. Everyone is used to the standard P plate design so what happens if you buy one with a different P plate letter?

According to to the vicroads website, you need to display P plates with a non-script font that is also a simple font.

We researched over 200 fonts (technically typefaces) to find the small number that meet the definition of being simple and non-script (don’t look hand-written).

As backup, we also contacted vicroads about whether designer P plates are legal to use. They reinforced that the P plate font should be simple and non-script but they did say that, ultimately, it was up to each police officer to show their own judgement as to whether the P plate fits the criteria.
